Pierre Viret
Pierre Viret (1511 - 1571) was a significant figure in the Swiss and French Reformation. Born in Orbe near Lausanne, he became convinced of the gospel through Reformation teaching while studying in Paris in the late 1520s. Viret worked closely with William Farel and John Calvin, playing a key role in spreading the Reformation message in various regions. He served as the chief pastor of Lausanne from 1536 to 1559, and later worked in Geneva and southwestern France. Viret was known for his preaching skills and his efforts to popularize Reformed teachings. He wrote extensively on theological topics, including a detailed treatise on man's creation in the image of God. Throughout his career, Viret faced challenges, including assassination attempts and exile, but remained committed to establishing and promoting the Reformed faith. His friendship with Calvin was particularly close, as evidenced by Calvin's desire for conversation and open communication with him.
