Humphrey Monmouth
In order to focus on translating the Greek New Tetstment into English, William Tyndale needed food, clothing, and a place to stay. Monmouth, a wealthy cloth merchant, heard Tyndale preach in 1524 and subsequently invited him into his home. He later paid for Tyndale's travel to mainland Europe so he could continue his translation work with more freedom. When Tyndale finished his first edition of the New Testament, Monmouth helped smuggle copies back into England in bolts of cloth. T hough Monmouth was imprisoned for aiding Tyndale, his sacrifice was not in vain. Just a few years later, English translations of the Bible were made available in every church.
