The Five Points of Calvinism
T | Total Depravity |
Man’s nature is pervasively corrupt and culpable. There is none righteous and none seek God. All people are born sinners, incapable of repenting. Genesis 6:5; 8:21; Ecclesiastes 9:3; Jeremiah 17:9; John 6:44, 65; Romans 3:10-12; 8:7-8; 1 Corinthians 2:14; Ephesians 2:1-3. |
U | Unconditional Election |
God unconditionally elects certain persons in His prevailing love. God’s election is not determined by anything a person may or may not be or do. God’s election is an act of love that has no deeper cause than His own good pleasure. Deuteronomy 7:6-8; John 1:12-13; 6:37-39; Romans 9:16; Ephesians 1:4-5, 11; 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5; 2 Thessalonians 2:13-14; 1 John 4:10, 19. |
L | Limited Atonement |
Christ suffers as a personal substitute for sinners and not just sin. Christ does not pay the sin penalty of the impenitent. In this way, atonement is limited to or particular of the redeemed. Otherwise, God would be guilty of double jeopardy (punishing a given crime more than once). Matthew 1:21; 26:28; Luke 19:10; John 1:11; 6:35-40; 10:11, 15, 26; Acts 20:28; Romans 5:8-10; 8:32-34; 1 Corinthians 15:22; Ephesians 1:3-4, 13; 5:25-27; Galatians 2:20; 1 Timothy 1:15; Revelation 5:9. |
I | Irresistible Grace | When God pursues a sinner with redeeming grace, He cannot be resisted. Those whom God elects will certainly be redeemed. Deuteronomy 30:6; Ezekiel 36:26-27; John 1:12-13; 3:3-8; 5:21; 6:37, 44; 10:16; Acts.13:48; 16:14; Romans 8:28-30; 2 Corinthians 5:17-18; Galatians 6:15; Ephesians 2:1, 5, 8-10; Colossians 2:13; 1 Peter 1:3. |
P | Perseverance of the Saints |
Redemption is accomplished and applied by God, guaranteeing the destination of final and full reconciliation to God. The redeemed will certainly persevere because it is God in them working and willing for His own good pleasure. John 6:37; 10:28-29; Romans 8:29, 38-39; 1 Corinthians 1:8; Philippians 1:6; 2:13; 1 Thessalonians 5:24; 1 Peter 1:3-5; Jude 24. |
